Icehouse 2.0 – Move & Timing

As you all are aware, we are moving, and soon!  We have been pushing the crew as hard as we can to hit our target date of 3/1, but unfortunately that is not going to happen (insert sad face).  Luckily our current space has let us extend our lease…for part of the gym through March.  Right now we are set to be completely in the new space on March 18, just a short wait for this amount of awesomeness!

SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR CLASSES?

Classes and events will run as usual through the end of the month, which is next Tuesday.  Beginning on March 1st, we will now be entering the gym through Door B (throwing it back to last year).  We will still have access to the restrooms, but our current Bootcamp/Aux/Lounge area will be rented out by another business beginning the 1st of the month, so that area will go away.

Check ZP!  We will be keeping classes up to date in the app, if you aren’t sure if there is a class or open gym, make sure you are still checking-in and looking at the app. That is the easiest way to keep up with any changes.

With the reduced space transition times during evening classes will be cozy.  Please keep that in mind if you need to bring kids they will need to stay seated on the cubbies during class.  This is a safety concern, so we can not make exceptions on this.

WHAT ABOUT FNL?

Week 1 for FNL will run as planned in the old space, so no worries there.

Week 2 is where there will be some changes since we will be operating with about 1/2 of our usual floor space.  We will be setting up some tents in the front and the back of the gym to extend our floor space for warm ups & socializing during week 2.  It will end up being a similar size to our current space that way, but will limit parking out front, so you may need to (gasp) park down the block.

Our theme is ‘MERICA for Week 2, so we are going full tailgate for it! If anyone has any tailgating equipment they are willing to lend us that would be super helpful (heat lamps & lights are what we are currently lacking) and we would greatly appreciate it!  Just like a tailgate, bring some extra layers if you want to spend more time socializing or warming up/stretching outside.

Week 3 is TBD.  We are hoping to be in the new space by week 3, but that would mean they finish a week early so we will keep pushing.  Keep an eye out on the social medias and “The Morning After” for updates on week 3.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP?

Phase 1: We’ve gotten a lot of questions about how you can help with the move.  Phase 1 will be to move out of gym A (the bootcamp room) this weekend.  Sara & I will be tearing down Gym A after classes on Saturday (2/25 beginning at 11AM), and we would welcome any help to do that.  Bonus we will be taking some equipment over to the new space, so you can also get a sneak peek that way 😉

Phase 2: Flooring!  We have new flooring that will need to be laid in the new space.  We are currently planning to lay the floors as early as next weekend (3/4).  Having a few extra jacked unicorns move the rolls will be extremely helpful!  We will post to the group what times we will be diving in once we know for sure the painting is done and ready for us!

Phase 2: TBD.  As mentioned we are pushing to get in ASAP, but currently planning to tear down and move the rest of the gym the week of 3/13.  Will share more details as we have firm timelines. Also make sure to keep an eye out on ZP, and on our group for any updates.  We may need to have a slightly adjusted schedule one day to accommodate the big move, but we will let you all know as soon as we know!

We are Moving!  Update #1

We are Moving! Update #1

As you as you all now know, we are moving!  And soon!  While we love our little corner of downtown we grew up in, it’s time to upgrade to a space that we can fit into…especially on Monday nights and Saturdays!

Where are you moving too?  

Our new address will be 1620 1st Ave N, which is just a few blocks west of university on 1st Ave N. What else does this mean? NO MORE GETTING STUCK BEHIND TRAINS!

When are you moving?

Our lease in our current space is done at the end of February, so we will be fully transitioned by March 1st.  We are still working on the exact dates we’ll start up at the new space and will keep you posted.  Our last day at the gym we’ll be having a moving WOD for those of you who would be so kind to help us shuffle our equipment to the new space!

What does the new space look like?

Outside:

The new space is currently Ice Blue as you can see in the attached photo.  While we like the Ice Blue Icehouse color, our new landlord likes more of a classic look, so it will be being restored back to it’s original brick/brick color.  So it won’t blend in with the sky quite so much when they are done with it 🙂

Inside the new space will have the following: :

  • 1,800 sq ft Bootcamp/Yoga/Fargomania Floor
  • 2,400 st ft CrossFit Floor
  • 1,000 sq ft Athlete Lounge/Locker Room
  • Front Desk/Retail station so we don’t have to scale cubbies to grab tshirts anymore!
  • Men’s and women’s restrooms with multiple stalls
  • 3 changing rooms
  • 2 showers
  • 2 meeting rooms upstairs for InBody Scans & Goals Meetings

Today is officially one year since we opened our doors! So much has changed in the past year, and we have you to thank! It’s been a crazy busy year, but easily the best one ever! So THANK YOU!

How This Madness Started

Icehouse started as a “hey we should open a gym!” I had been doing the long distance thing between Minneapolis and Fargo for about 2 years, and was looking to move north at some point.  Sara & I were competing together in St. Cloud one weekend when we threw out this crazy idea.  That week my current employer announced they were going to be going through a massive “restructuring,” so my job was potentially going to be eliminated.  At that point I called Sara and set up a meeting to see if that crazy gym talk was really a possibility.

We agreed that it would be awesome, and we should totally try to do it.  I’d take the business side, and she’d take the programming/head coach duties.  It was perfect…so long as she could move with me to Fargo….so we moved forward!  That was in October, by December I had a new job lined up, we had an affiliate and just needed to find a location.  Three realtors, many visits later we couldn’t find what we wanted in the downtown area (that we could afford at least!).  So on a whim Sara checked Craiglist, and we found this gem (tucked away and all Dojo’d up!)

So we moved North, where we knew about 5 people (if that), and we opened up the doors and hustled and hoped for the best!  The first few months were a lot of nights with just the 3 of us WODing, and planning on what we could do to get the word out. Was A LOT quieter in those days!  WODing is great and all, but as you all know WAY more fun with friends!

While we are still small in the grand scheme of things, our community is nothing short of amazing!  We have loved getting to know each of you, and watch you grow as athletes and overall badasses 🙂  You’ve set big goals, and crushed them!  The open has been such an awesome display of what you have all worked so hard for!  We’ve had so many of the feels the past year, and especially the past 4 weeks watching so many of you do what you didn’t think you could!  We are so proud of you all!

It’s been 1 year of awesome, 2 expansions, lots of fun events and so many awesome memories and friendships made.  We are so incredibly glad we made the leap and moved north to open Icehouse and meet all of you wonderfully amazing people, and our lives are so much richer with you all as a part of it!

How to Use Open Gym

How to Use Open Gym

We are slowly starting to see attendance pick up at our open gyms which is awesome, but for those of you who may not have used them or have any idea of what to do with that time, here are a few ways you can use them.

Make Up a Past Workout

If there was a workout posted that you couldn’t make, this is an awesome way to get that workout made up.  This is probably the easiest application of open gym but definitely a great one!

Work on your GOATS

Your GOAT in CrossFit is a movement that you are not so good at, and that is putting it politely.  It could be anything; barbell movement, gymnastics movement, body weight movement, kettlebell movement, or simply flexibility and/or mobility.  The only way to attack your goat is to work on it! Maybe you are trying to get that first double under, or string some pull ups together.

This is my personal favorite use of open gym, simply because I can tackle a few at a time if I so choose.  There is always at least 1 of us coaches at open gym to help you choose which goats to tackle, or if you already know which ones you have your eyes set on, we can give you the appropriate progression to take you to the next level on those movements.  Spoiler Alert: at least one of your goats will inevitably show up in the open….so destroy those goats and move on the next ones!

Olympic Lifts

This is a great time to hone in your technique on your OLY lifts.  If you plan to work on these make sure you let one of the coaches know so we can help you make the appropriate adjustments to move you in the right direction.  We’ll even give you a few accessory lifts to take your lifts to the next level.  We have also added in Barbell Basics on Tuesday nights that will serve the same purpose, but be more structured.

Accessory Work

Maybe you miss some of those lifts from your Globo Gym days, or maybe you want to target that one muscle that actually isn’t sore this week; this is a great time for that as well.  Bench press is often one we see people add back in during open gym, and that is great!  I personally have been adding in some strict dips as well as back extensions on the GHD to work some of those muscles that need a little extra love.

Mobility
Mobility is key

Mobility is such a big piece of the pie that so many of us often neglect.  This can be worked in with basically any of the above, or is a great use of the hour on its own as well. Grab a foam roller, lacross ball, the tiger tail, voodoo band, resistance bands, etc and start working that mobility!  Listen to your body, it’ll tell you where you need to focus. If you aren’t sure just about all of us would benefit from some good ol’ fashion shoulder, wrist, and thoracic mobility work.  If you don’t recognize half of that list, than come in for open gym so we can show you all the goodness!
